Meet Dr. Sprunger

Originally from Indiana, Dr. Sprunger graduated from Indiana University with degrees in biology and chemistry. After receiving his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Sprunger completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of Iowa, where he was trained by Dr. Edward Mason, the surgeon who performed the very first operation (gastric bypass) for obesity in 1966. Dr. Sprunger has practiced general and advanced laparoscopic surgery since 1989 and laparoscopic bariatric surgery since 2005, coming to Phoenix in 2008. Dr. Sprunger is designated a Center of Excellence bariatric surgeon by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

“There are few things in the practice of medicine that have a more dramatic effect on health than bariatric surgery:

  • To see hypertension, high cholesterol, acid reflux, back and joint pain, and sleep apnea go away!
  • To know that a couple, previously unable to conceive because of infertility due to obesity, is now going to have a baby!
  • To witness not just better control of blood sugar, but complete remission of Type II Diabetes!

There’s nothing else like it!

“The technical aspects of surgery have always been fascinating to me. Surgery requires tremendous concentration and proficiency. Over the course of my career, I have particularly enjoyed refining my skills in advanced laparoscopy which has had such a profound effect on the safety of bariatric surgery. I get immense satisfaction from performing surgery and patient care very well, then witnessing the results.”

“There are few things more meaningful or rewarding in life than to use the gifts God has given me to benefit others:

  • A young woman comments that she now catches men sneaking glances at her
  • A proud father, for the first time in years, is able to go on a hike with his son
  • A woman sends us pictures of herself after she walked and ran in a mini-marathon, and finished
  • A grandfather no longer has to use a wheelchair

As a result of the success of bariatric surgery, these are some of the happy stories we get to hear about every day! Bariatric surgery changes lives! What’s better than that?”

dr-sprunger“For me, bariatric surgery is so much more than a way to make a living or even a service I provide. It is a series of relationships and a series of journeys that I take part in and experience along with my patients. This is extraordinarily meaningful for me because what I do can help people so profoundly. It can transform their lives, enabling them to enjoy feelings and activities and health and happiness they may have never thought possible. I feel so privileged to be able to share in that. It gives me immense satisfaction and pride.”

“I am absolutely confident that we at the Phoenix Bariatric Center can help you to attain what you desire – to achieve your weight loss goal, to be and feel healthier, to be free of many of the restrictions that Severe Obesity has imposed on your life, and to look to the future with optimism. I hope you will allow us to help you.”
