Severe Obesity imposes a heavy burden on a human life. It strains your heart and can contribute to blocking the arteries and overloading the leg veins. It can make you short of breath during the day and reduce the oxygen level in your blood at night. It can interfere with the proper function of insulin and the regulation of blood sugar, resulting in diabetes. It can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a host of other medical problems. It can make you hurt from back and joint pain or from heartburn or gallbladder disease or skin irritation. It can reduce your chance of having children.

Gastric Bypass

A small pouch is created from the upper part of the stomach and connected directly to the upper small intestine. This will enable you to be less hungry, eat less and absorb fewer calories. The reduction in your daily calorie intake will cause you to lose about 50% of your excess weight within 6 months and 80% within one year and resolve or improve your weight-related medical problems.

Sleeve Gastectomy

A narrow stomach tube or “sleeve” is created with removal of 80- 85% of the stomach, including the area that produces the hunger hormone called Ghrelin. Your hunger will be reduced and your stomach will hold less enabling you to eat less. The reduction in your daily calorie intake will cause you to lose about 65-70% of your excess weight within one year and resolve or improve your weight-related health problems.

Adjustable Gastric Band

A synthetic device meant to remain in your body for life, the band is placed around the upper stomach creating a small stomach pouch. The band is then gradually inflated or “filled” to provide restriction of the passage of food and a feeling of fullness with less food. On average, patients can lose about 45% of their excess weight. However, a significant percentage of patients will not even achieve this result or will require removal of the band for a complication.

Bariatric Revision Surgery

Occasionally, patients who have previously had bariatric surgery will require revision surgery either due to a complication that has occurred since the original operation or because of weight regain. A complication called prolapse or “slippage” can occur after band surgery, usually requiring band removal and revision to another bariatric operation. Often, patients who have regained weight do not require revision surgery, but rather, the re-establishment of proper eating habits and nutritional and fitness counseling.
